“Parenting without Punishments”

"Punishment doesn't even teach what not to do, much less the reason not to do it: what it really teaches is a desire to avoid punishment... We say "Don't let me catch you doing that again!" and the child silently responds, "Okay - next time you won't catch me."

“Education of the Senses”

“All these explorations into the sphere of sensorial attributes, carried on day after day, month after month, collectively form an unusually sure and broad foundation for the child’s subsequent higher mental life. It is a real inward preparation.”

E.M. Standing “Maria Montessori: Her Life and Work.

Through practical demonstrations this workshop will examine the key role played by the sensorial materials in facilitating the child’s optimum growth and preparing them for future learning.

“Language:

Exploring the Function of Words”

It is generally accepted that subjects such as grammar are not suited to children under the age of six and should be introduced much later. Montessori discovered the child is endowed with the capacity to store sensorial impressions until: “…the moment comes for reasoning on these images at which time they already form part of their mental equipment, almost as if they were innate ideas. This leads, at this later stage, to a quicker and more accurate comprehension on a more abstract level.” (Maria Montessori)

Through the examination and exploration of the more advanced Casa language materials, this workshop will explain how the foundations of grammar and word study are laid.

“Fostering Independence

in the

Elementary Child”

“All efforts of growth are efforts to acquire independence. A matter of vital importance to individuality is that it should be able to function by itself. In order to grow and to develop, the child needs to acquire independence.”

Maria Montessori “What You Should Know About Your Child”

This workshop will examine features of the 6 to 12 environment that help nurture independence and disuss ways in which independence may be fostered in the home.

Implementing

Second Language Education

in a Montessori Environment

The young child “absorbs” their language from the home environment in which they find themselves immersed. In the Montessori Casa the child continues, to refine their oral facility while developing the relevant skills that lead to mastery of the written and printed word. The elementary aged child is presented a “cosmic” view of language and through analysis, grammar study and relevant usage continues to develop their communication skills.  The child’s capacity for language acquisition is so remarkable that in truly bilingual or even multilingual environments multiple languages may be mastered simultaneously.

Can a second language be “taught” effectively in a non bilingual Montessori environment? If so is there a price to be paid in regard to the integrity of the Montessori program? Can there be a reasonable compromise?

All parents are invited to join us for an examination of this challenging and often divisive topic.

A limited number of "after school care" places are available for parents attending these workshops. Please call the office ahead of time to reserve space.
